INSIDER SPOTLIGHT: Correctional Officers
Correctional officers in the state prison system have a new spotlight this year with allies including Gov. Pat McCrory pushing to raise their pay to levels they say are more fitting for employees who deal daily with people society had to lock away. The current average pay is less than $30,000 despite the statistic -- shared by McCrory during his State of the State speech in February -- that a North Carolina correctional officer was assaulted on the job every 11 hours last year. The Insider decided to take a closer look and visited Central Prison in Raleigh to talk with correctional officers, and superiors who started out in that job, to see what the day-to-day is like.
