Starting February 21st in freezing temperatures, ice, and rain, this hike didn’t begin easy. Most northbound Appalachian Trail thru hikes fail early in Georgia and North Carolina due to extreme elevation gain, and I found out why quickly. From brutal weather, gear failures, and illness (including Giardia), to some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States, this journey became more than just miles.
