Unlike the bourgeois dramas of Risorgimento operas, this work introduces innovative dramaturgy: it narrates how this couple came together by chance on a shared landing, the reality of their relationship under harsh living conditions where their happiness is constantly on the brink of collapse, and finally, Mimi's sordid death, caused by these precarious conditions, against which Rodolfo and his companions are powerless. The love story of La Bohème allows Puccini to portray an "innate" and "unconscious" romanticism, far removed from bourgeois conventions of arranged marriages and flamboyant, passionate love affairs. This new romanticism arises from the sensitivity of an artist (Rodolfo) to the beauty of a working-class woman (Mimi), who embodies the noble simplicity of the poor and exploited. Despite life's misfortunes, they maintain an unyielding joy for life and remain ever helpful and united. Through Mimi, Puccini vividly portrays the harsh realities of Parisian workers’ living conditions, culminating in the death of his heroine in poverty and utter anonymity (save for her close friends and her lover, Rodolfo). La Bohème also offers a depiction of class struggles in Paris, with eternally dissatisfied bourgeois figures, poor but joyful artists devoted to their craft, and finally the working class, surviving as best they can. The opera’s great achievement is its shift from realistic drama to tragedy in the third act, as the audience realizes that Mimi cannot escape a death caused by her living conditions. Thus, the cold garret that symbolized her love and happiness with Rodolfo in the first act, where nothing else seemed to matter, ultimately becomes her demise. This shift elevates Mimi's illness to the level of a true protagonist in the story—both a driving force of the drama and an embodiment of the tragedy itself.
