How human and physical terrain doomed the British in Malaya - A military disaster explained.
The geographic and human terrain in the Singapore campaign played a crucial role in who the British fought and lost and the Japanese moved and won. This episode dissects both types of terrain and how they limited options for Percival in his defence of Malaya and ultimately of Singapore. The decisive terrain in this campaign for the British was the Sembawang naval base. It had to be retained for a fleet that would never arrive. Percival's inability to see the difficulty that this created and the lack of coordination between the RAF and their location of the airbases with the Army that needed to defend them, condemned the Allies to a very difficult defensive battle at best, but in reality set some of the conditions for the Japanese lightning advance. The RAF had a range of bases, including Alor Star, Kota Bharu, Kuantan, Kuala Lumpar, Kluang and at Batu Pahat. Many fell quickly as the Japanese advance outpaced the British mobility and a propensity to withdraw grew amongst the troops. The human terrain, the Tamals, the Malays, the Indians and the Chinese in Malaya was a squandered resource for the British Colonial administration. The Japanese advance was often supported by the Malays because of the harsh treatment of the British administrators. Rich in tin mines and rubber plantations, Malaya had been exploited for it's riches, creating civil unrest which had been largely ignored by the colonial administration. Effective doctrine is constructed from past experience, operational requirements and technological feasibility. This and the next episode will look at how each of armies viewed the problem and the solutions they derived. The loss of Malaya and the subsequent loss of Singapore was a great shock to the British Empire, but had the lessons of the human and geographic terrain been learnt, this tragedy could have been lessened or even avoided.
