In this video, I introduce the topic of enzymes by discussing what they are, what they do, and how they do what they do. Enzymes are biological catalysts, and they speed up chemical reactions without altering the thermodynamics of said reactions. They do this, specifically, by lowering the activation energy of a reaction, and they lower the activation energy of a reaction by stabilizing the transition state, the high-energy intermediate of a reaction that exists between reactants and products. Enzymes bind their substrates at a site called the active site, which is very specific as to what it binds to.
