The Internet Chose Our parkrun: Riverside Walk, Hay-on-Wye
Riverside Walk parkrun in Hay-on-Wye, a little gem of a parkrun, but how did we end up here for our parkrun tourism adventure? The instigator of Iona’s parkrun tourism non-repeat streak, Daniel, messaged us earlier in the week, asking about our weekend’s plans as he had an empty car, though, just like me, no destination planned and wondered if we’d like to join up for our parkrun adventures. But where to go? Daniel decided to entrust our destination to the mouse clicks of our fellow parkrun tourists on the UK parkrun tourist group. Would we go North, South, East or West? A poll created with suggestions of venues at each point of the compass, the final decision was left in their hands. Late on Friday evening, we reviewed the results . . . they had chosen . . . West to Riverside Walk! 6am, Daniel rolls up outside and off we head, the first section swiftly along the M5, the second not so swiftly on the back lanes of Herefordshire. Parking in Hay, we wended our way down to under the bridge, which marks the start, where we found probably the only parkrun venue which has a book lending library at its start! Briefed (with a rather excellent map) off we went. Iona was not in a running mood (is she still recovering from last week’s PB?) so we took it steady mostly at a brisk walk, appreciating the fabulous views of the river and surrounding hills while chatting to the tail-walkers. This is a smallish parkrun, their average number of finishers is 52, but it’s a beauty. The scenery is spectacular, the team friendly and the couse is a great undulating trail run, parkrun perfection! parkrun done, it was breakfast time. Ewan made the choice, I think spotting pancakes on the menu took us to Cosy Cafe. Delicious! Then exploration time, I managed to resist entering the plethora of second-hand book shops for which Hay-on-Wye is famous, but Hay Castle was a must-visit. Great view from the top of the Norman tower, some really interesting information about the town and its history and chance to sit on a throne made of books. After all, Hay is an independent kingdom! Before our car-park ticket expired, we made our way back through the town, grabbing some tasty treats to enjoy later, hopping back in the car for our journey home. Our weekends often start with parkrun. Iona is on a non-repeat parkrun tourism streak having now visited over 100 different places since she started parkrunning. But we don’t just do parkun and dash home, we love exploring the area and often use bikes and trains for our travels to keep our carbon footprint low and because it adds to the adventure too. When school holidays arrive, longer adventures are possible with Ewan and Iona both being keen cycle tourists and mountain climbers! So if you like heading outdoors and your idea of a perfect weekend includes parkrun, climbing a mountain or exploring new places on two wheels then we would love to have you join us on our adventures. We’d love it if you subscribed so you can follow our journey and hopefully be inspired to get out the door and have your own little adventures.
