Explains how to calculate gravitational potential energy of an object that is far from Earth and why the equation has a negative sign in front of it. Gravitational potential energy is the energy associated with a gravitational field. Gravitational energy is dependent on the masses of the two objects, the distance between them and the gravitational constant (G). Two or more masses always have a gravitational potential. As required by the law of conservation of energy the gravitational field energy is always negative.
