Malaysia has announced it will expel all Israelis from its territory. On the 15th, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made this strong statement to the media: "If there are Israeli citizens in the country, they will be immediately expelled because we do not recognize Israel." This news has left many bewildered: Is Malaysia really this "tough"? Is it going to completely sever ties with Israel? Why is Malaysia taking such a firm stance? Let's look at a detail. This is an inside page of a Malaysian passport, printed with a very strong statement: "This passport is valid for all countries in the world, except Israel." This is not just a slogan, but a strict rule. If a Malaysian citizen travels to Israel without permission, their passport will be revoked upon return, according to the country's Passport Law. Conversely, Israeli passport holders are, in principle, prohibited from entering Malaysia by air, land, or sea. They are barred from all ports of entry, and even transiting through Kuala Lumpur Airport is prohibited. Enforcement is very strict; Malaysian media reported that eight Israeli tourists who were unaware of the situation were recently arrested. So, Anwar's talk of deportation, while sounding drastic, isn't actually a new policy. It's a decades-old rule in Malaysia: they've never allowed Israelis into their territory. Since independence, Malaysia has never recognized Israel as a sovereign state. The two countries have never had diplomatic relations. So, given this is an old rule, why has it sparked such a public outcry? The issue itself isn't complicated. In Johor, Malaysia, a former executive of the cryptocurrency platform Coinbase started a project called "Online School." While called a school, it's more like a shared community for tech entrepreneurs. Recently, local media discovered that Israelis were suspected of participating in the community's operations. Of course, they weren't entering with Israeli passports; they held dual citizenship, thus circumventing Malaysia's ban. After the news broke, the Malaysian Immigration Department immediately conducted raids, checking the documents of 266 foreign nationals. Anwar quickly followed up with a statement, setting the tone: regardless of your status upon entry, regardless of your business acumen or tech elite status, if you're found to have Israeli citizenship, you're immediately removed. So why does Malaysia "hate" Israel so much? This was certainly not Anwar's decision based on personal likes or dislikes, but rather a political principle established from the very beginning of Malaysia's founding. As early as 1956, before Malaysia's independence, Israel had proactively approached Malaysia. At that time, then-Israeli Foreign Minister Moshe Sharit specifically met with Tunku Abdul Rahman, the future "Father of Malaysia," and offered a condition: I would recognize your independence, and you would recognize my nationhood—a trade. In 1957, Israel's first Prime Minister, Ben-Gurion, also extended an olive branch, voting in favor of Malaya's accession to the United Nations. In short, they still wanted diplomatic recognition in exchange. (Note: Malaya is the predecessor and core component of Malaysia.) However, Tunku Abdul Rahman rejected all these attempts to win him over. By the early 1960s, the Malayan government had officially established its policy of not recognizing Israel. This policy was inherited when the Federation of Malaysia was formed in 1963 and continues to this day. It can be said that in the entire Muslim world, Malaysia's stance towards Israel has consistently been among the most hardline. For over half a century, leaders have changed, but the political gene of criticizing Israel and supporting Palestine has been passed down through generations. Take, for example, the well-known political strongman Mahathir Mohamad. After coming to power in 1981, he granted the PLO diplomatic status, received Yasser Arafat with high-level protocol, and promoted an "International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" nationwide. He also supported Palestine on various occasions, using very strong language. Current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is similar, having done several things that have left a deep impression: In October 2023, after the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he publicly condemned Israel's atrocities. As a result, the United States couldn't sit still. That month, the US Embassy in Malaysia issued three diplomatic notes, pressuring Malaysia to change its position.
