But Sazan Island is more than a paradise. Right now it's at the heart of the Flamingo Revolution; the wave of protests sweeping Albania in defense of this protected coastline. The island and the nearby Vjosa-Narta protected area and Narta Lagoon are home to monk seals, sea turtles, and more than 200 bird species, including the flamingos and pelicans that gave the movement its name. Demonstrators carrying inflatable flamingos and flamingo cutouts have filled the streets of Zvërnec, Vlorë, and Tirana to oppose the controversial €1.4-billion luxury resort development on this protected land.
