Ala Archa: Kyrgyzstan's spectacular mountain gorge

Just outside Bishkek, less than an hour’s drive from Kyrgyzstan’s capital, is Ala Archa National Park, home to the eponymous gorge and to glacial peaks, some of which surpass 16,000 feet (4,877 meters). I joined a small group tour for a day trip to the park, and an energizing hike above the gorge to a place called Broken Heart Rock. If you’re up to a strenuous but moderate hike above 8,000 feet (2,438 meters), I highly recommend it.
