It is a unique place, full of mysterious cult sculptures, medieval ruins, geological curiosities, and legends that have drawn people here for centuries. We begin our journey in Sobótka, a town with a centuries-old history, lying at the foot of the mountain. Along the way, we pass medieval traces, historic churches, memorial sites, and unique megalithic sculptures such as the mysterious Monk, around which a legend of the end of the world still lingers. We will also stop by the PTTK “Dom Turysty Pod Wieżycą” mountain lodge, which has welcomed hikers for more than a hundred years. On the trail, we will encounter natural springs, cobbled roads built by the German Zobten Gebirgsverein, and the monumental lookout tower on Wieżyca, formerly a Bismarck tower. I will also tell you about the massif’s extraordinary geology – the ophiolite complex, a fragment of ancient oceanic crust from hundreds of millions of years ago, uplifted during mountain-building processes. As we climb higher, we will enter a nature reserve, where remnants of primeval forest and rare plant species still survive. At the summit of Ślęża, we will find many attractions: the massive PTTK mountain lodge, a historic church built on the ruins of a Piast castle, fragments of ancient cult ramparts, and the famous Bear sculpture – the symbol of the mountain. This is a hike that combines nature, geology, history, and legend.
