Raymond is widowed for 15 years, rich and handsome playboy. Raymond hardly gives her daughter any rule, not even in her studies, nor tries to put limits to her curiosity, especially in her love life. Underneath the endless round of parties and nightclubs, there is a desperate, secret sadness. These scenes are shot in black and white, as opposed to the rich, boiling colour in which the earlier period is shown. Cécile remembers a golden summer on the French Riviera, depicted in sumptuous color, which renders the pleasures of sun, sea, and sky heavy with doom. She spends summer in a villa in Côte d'Azur, with with her father and Elsa, Raymond's new fianceé, dizzy blonde. One day, Anne Larson, beautiful fashion designer, cultured, stern and orderly lady, friend of Raymond's late wife arrives at Raymond's villa for a visit and Raymond develops more serious feelings for Anne. Cécile is content for her father to dally with Elsa, but becomes frozen with hostility when Raymond and Anna become close and Raymond soon proposes marriage. Cécile finds that Anne disturbs their entirely casual vacation and threatens to alter their hedonistic lifestyle and change their lives permanently. Anne hows every sign of wanting to be her stepmother and usurping her special place in Raymond's heart. Cécile does her best to break up the couple. Despite his promises of fidelity to Anne, Raymond cannot give up his playboy life. Helped by Elsa, Raymond's young and flighty mistress, Cécile does her best to break up the relationship with Anne. Little do they know that Anne's attitude hides a fragility and pain that may have tragic consequences. With all the heedless arrogance and naivety of youth, Cecile conceives a terrible act of wickedness. The combination of the daughter's disdain and the father's rakishness drives Anne to a tragic end.
