The Bird of Happiness is a 1940 American fantasy adventure film directed by Walter Lang and starring Shirley Temple. Adapted from the 1908 play by Maurice Maeterlinck, the film was Twentieth Century-Fox's colorful fantasy answer to the previous year's The Wizard of Oz. Plot: Set during the Napoleonic era, the story follows Mytyl, a selfish and unhappy young girl, and her brother Tyltyl. After refusing to help a sick friend, Mytyl is visited in a dream by the Fairy Berylune, who sends the children on a magical quest to find the Blue Bird of Happiness. Accompanied by their dog, cat, and other enchanted companions transformed into human form, they journey through fantastic realms including the Land of Memory, the Palace of Luxury, the Forest, and the Land of the Unborn. Through these adventures, Mytyl learns kindness, gratitude, and the true meaning of happiness. In the end, she discovers that happiness has been close to home all along.
