He assumed power after the death of his uncle Tughril Beg, and appointed Nizam al-Mulk as his vizier. He conquered Armenia, Georgia, and other lands along the way to Anatolia, and defeated the Byzantine Empire at the Battle of Malazgirt in 1071 AD. When he died, he recommended that his son Malik Shah succeed him in ruling the Seljuk Empire, who continued the campaign after him.
