Tashirojima (Tashiro Island), a small island in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most famous cat islands, visited by cat lovers from all over the world. More than 200 cats live on this little island, and dozens of them gather at feeding time at Shima-no-eki. This time, I stayed for three days and two nights, which gave me more time to spend with the cats than on my previous visit. About 40 minutes by ferry from Ishinomaki, this small island in Ishinomaki City is home to many cats who live freely and are dearly cared for by the island residents. On the first day, I arrived at stormy Nitoda Port. On the second day, I finally visited Odomari Port, which I couldn’t make it to last time, and enjoyed the food I had been looking forward to at Hamaya. At Tashiro Shokudo, I spent a peaceful time with the adorable cats and had a delicious meal. I also visited the Cat Shrine, which is closely connected to the cats of the island. At Shima-no-eki, I was overwhelmed by the sight of dozens of cats gathering for their regular feeding time. And in the evening, after the day-trip visitors had left, Tashirojima began to show a quieter side, completely different from the daytime.
