The Su-35 program originated with the development of the Su-27M or T-10M aircraft, based on the Su-27's architecture, but with the addition of canards in the 1980s. However, the project was later abandoned. In 2002, Russia began to pursue the modernization of its aging Su-27, which was beginning to become obsolete. Sukhoi and KnAAPO began upgrading the Glass Cockpit system and its weapons control system. With the original Su-27S, which later became the Su-27SM, Sukhoi initiated a modernization project, codenamed T-10BM (BM = Major Modernization), aimed at narrowing the performance gap between Russia's fourth-generation fighters and those of other nations.
