This is the winter season of Baeksa Village in Junggye-dong, the last shantytown overlooking Seoul. ● A Village Where the Smell of Coal Gas Persists in the Midwinter This winter is said to be the coldest in 10 years. Baeksa Village, Seoul's last shantytown, is experiencing a harsher winter than anywhere else. While they receive coal briquettes, their livelihoods are still insufficient. Oh Yang-sook (78), a resident of Onyang Sanghoe, collects discarded coal briquette ash from someone else's house. She even reheats the blackened bits, claiming they can be reused. Kim Yeong-chun (53), said his water pipes froze due to the bitter cold, and he hasn't been able to wash his face for three days. He anxiously waits for the construction to be completed. Only three days after construction was completed, water began flowing from Kim Young-chun's tap. For the people of Baeksa Village, unable to repair their homes due to redevelopment plans, this winter feels colder than ever. ● A Slope Built on Sweat, Tears, and Dreams Jeong Mi-ok (60), who runs a small hairband factory, left her beloved hometown after a failed business venture and has lived on the hillside of Baeksa Village for 40 years. She has worked tirelessly, from making socks to working for others. As if rewarded for all her sweat and tears, she has received her first opportunity to export to China. With good news coming from the start of the new year, she pays close attention to every single package. Yeom Sang-gu, an old man who used to chop firewood in his backyard, had only five won in his hand when he first came to Seoul. He worked in a factory and raised all his children in his current home at the top of Junggye-dong. Although his home sits atop a steep slope, it is a precious home for him, a home he would not envy even an apartment. The steep slope, once dense with pine trees. Those who arrived here with tears in their eyes, dreaming and working hard to build their current place. Last year, it was designated a redevelopment zone, and their days of walking on steep slopes are numbered. When will 83-year-old Kang Myeong-hye's (83-year-old) dream of living in a house with hot water finally come true? ● What is the temperature of your heart? In the quiet village of Junggye-dong, where people have moved away one by one, there's a house that's particularly bustling. Six siblings and nephews have gathered at their old house for the birthday of their eldest son, Choi Beom-sik (58). The stories they tell, one by one, are endless. They even tell stories of ten people sleeping in one room, carrying water with a water jug, and climbing mountains to do laundry. Despite the famine, they always felt secure knowing they had siblings who laughed and cried with them. Choi Yeon-ok (44) says no sunset can be as beautiful as the one from this house.
