(BREAKING) F-16 Scrambles to Intercept Cessna 400 — Almost “Turns It Over With Jet Wash!”

On 19 May 2026, a Cessna 400 departing Warrenton-Fauquier Airport for Westchester County Airport reportedly violated the Washington, D.C. Special Flight Rules Area (SFRA) shortly after departure while flying VFR without contacting Potomac Approach. The airspace breach triggered an air defense response involving a Eurocopter MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Washington National Airport and F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters from Andrews. During the incident, departures from Baltimore/Washington International Airport were temporarily halted and some arrivals into Washington Dulles received delay vectors. Multiple attempts by Potomac controllers and Leesburg Tower to contact the aircraft went unanswered until the fighters intercepted the Cessna northwest of Baltimore and established communication on Guard frequency. The pilot was then instructed to contact Potomac, assigned a squawk code, and allowed to continue northeast under flight following. The military aircraft were later released back to base after the situation was resolved.
