Banghak's famous Dokkaebi Market (방학동 도깨비시장) - 🇰🇷 SEOUL WALK

Let's walk through the famous Dokkaebi Market, located in Banghak-dong, where I live and teach English here in Seoul. This market is very famous for their sales and lower prices, sometimes as low as 1/10th the price of a regular store. The word "Dokkaebi" means like "mischievous spirit" or similar. The term is usually used on inanimate objects, that may contain some type of spirit. The best example I can give of this meaning is like the old cartoons from the 1940s, where the kitchen comes to life after dark with plates and forks dancing around. But as soon as morning comes or when someone flips the light switch, all the inanimate objects stop moving or disappear. This market popped up around the early 1980s. During that time, many large supermarket corporations were popping up, and small businesses didn't like that. Many consumers also didn't like paying the higher prices at those type of places. This market used to have illegal vendors selling their goods without a permit. The police would show up randomly to try and ticket those people, but the vendors were too quick and always packed up and left within a matter of seconds. The police had trouble fining those vendors. The vendors were referred to as "dokkaebi" since they were able to disappear so quickly. And the name stuck, and was applied to the market itself.
