Highlight Tone Priority - EOS R5 Mark 2 Tip 28
In this video, I take a detailed look at Highlight Tone Priority (HTP) on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II—what it does, how it works, and when you should (and shouldn’t) use Though I should point out, this feature isn’t new to the R5 mark 2, in fact what I describe in this video should apply to any Canon EOS R series camera. I start by explaining what Highlight Tone Priority is: a setting that shifts the camera’s metering to allow it to capture and store an extra stop of highlight detail before clipping. This is done by shifting the meter’s ISO up 1 stop effectively exposing the next lower ISO by 1 stop. However, this comes at a cost: your shadows gain more noise and less flexibility in post. Next, I demonstrate how HTP works in real-world shooting. In bright outdoor conditions or high-contrast scenes, it can preserve subtle gradations in bright tones that would otherwise blow out. But in low light or flat lighting, it’s often counterproductive, as you’re effectively losing one stop of shadow latitude. I also compare HTP to Canon Log and HDR PQ. These modes already preserve dynamic range more effectively, so in most modern workflows, Highlight Tone Priority is redundant. Still, if you’re shooting JPEGs or want extra highlight protection in quick-turnaround photography, it remains a valuable tool. Ultimately, Highlight Tone Priority on the R5 Mark II is best treated as a situational feature—useful when you need to protect whites in bright, uncontrolled lighting, but not ideal for high ISO or low-contrast shooting. Knowing when to enable it is the key to getting consistent, natural-looking results. #CanonR5MarkII, #HighlightTonePriority, #PhotographyTips, #DynamicRange, #CameraSettings ══════════════════════ 💵 Support the Channel and Content Like This 💵 ══════════════════════ ⯈ Click the Thanks Button under the video. ⯈ Use PayPal: https://paypal.me/pointsinfocus ⯈ Buy yourself something from the affiliate links below. ⯈ Amazon.com: https://amzn.to/4dloDzU ══════════════════════ Gear I Use to Make Videos ══════════════════════ (Affiliate links) ⯈ Canon EOS R5 - https://amzn.to/3uJNNVI ⯈ Canon EOS R5 Mark II - https://amzn.to/4lauoV6 ⯈ Canon EOS R5C - https://amzn.to/4goyveX ⯈ SmallRig NP-F Battery Adapter Pro - https://amzn.to/3ybCY3h ⯈ SmallRig VB99 Pro V-Mount Battery - https://amzn.to/4l55c25 ⯈ Anker Prime 27650 mAh Power Bank - https://amzn.to/4dsP8o4 ⯈ Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM - https://amzn.to/37SuLDw ⯈ Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM - https://amzn.to/3M9I0yQ ⯈ Rode NTG2 - https://amzn.to/4lZ9BVL ⯈ Rode Wireless Go - ⯈ Zoom F6 - https://amzn.to/2TWsSvo ══════════════════════ Chapters ══════════════════════ 00:00 Intro 02:17 Understanding the Meter 07:20 Highlight Tone Priority Mode 09:26 Limitations 10:17 Function and Impact 14:32 Should You Use?
