Stop Handling and Start Trusting - When the Work Finally Clicks
Day 5 of 5. This week I released a full coaching and training session with Ridge and a 2 year old named Better - broken into 5 videos posting Monday through Friday. If you missed any of the earlier videos go back and watch from the beginning. Here's everything we covered this week: π Monday β Trot squares and pattern precision. Close enough is never good enough and the details you practice every day are the ones that show up in the show pen. π Tuesday β Getting soft in the face. Slow hands, soft release, use your feet. No shortcut β just reps and feel until it clicks. π Wednesday β Lead departures and lateral movement. One lead departure revealed that Better didn't understand the right leg lateral well enough, and we spent the session fixing it. Also β yes, even experienced horsemen let their reins go uneven. That's exactly why that Tip of the Week mattered. π Thursday β Diagnosing the gas pedal and mixed signals. When a head pops up on a lead departure it's almost never just about the departure. We figured out why and fixed it by turning him completely loose. π Friday (today) β Putting it all together. The final reps, the summary, and watching Better go from a messy departure to one of his best ones of the day. The biggest takeaway from this whole week: stop babysitting. Give your horse a clear signal, give them the chance to respond, and when they do β release completely. Clean slate. Do it again. That's the whole game. π€ In today's video: πΉ Fixing the inside leg signal that was creating a 50/50 guess for the horse πΉ Why sitting square and keeping your eyes up changes everything πΉ The final lead departure reps and watching it come together πΉ Matt's full wrap up on what causes heads to pop up on departures πΉ Why there's no perfect time to start doing it right β the time is now πΉ The difference between handling too much and letting the horse do its job What resonated with you the most this week? Drop it in the comments β I'd love to know what landed. π If you want more of this kind of detailed coaching and training content every single week, head over to the Gold Medal Formula at mattmillsreining.com.
