The Medieval Town • Calming Creations • Drawing Ambience

Hello and welcome to my latest video! In this drawing session I wanted to go back to a design idea I've worked on here and there over the years where I use graphic layouts to create a representation of a landscape. I was inspired by the medieval drawings of city maps where the little buildings stack one of top of another to form street layouts. And I've also been experimenting with different ways to draw fields using rectangles of varying heights to show perspective. By starting with a stained watercolour background, I used only lines to create the separation between each section, and filled most of them with watercolour paint. Then on-top I used black and white ink to create the shapes and add contrast. I really like the way the buildings turned out especially and can imagine ways to use this approach again in the future with even more buildings and more variations in their size.
