Fire Starting: How to make Amadou. Amadou has been used for fire starting for thousands of years. Amadou was discovered in the bag of the Ice-man found in the Austrain Alps. Amadou is easy to process but takes some time and you wonder how did our ancestors learn how to process this to help in starting a fire. Amadou comes from the Horse Hoof fungus which is a parasitic bracket fungus found on dead or dying Birch trees. Yes I realised in post I have a sooty mark on my nose!! The fungus I have used here is probably not the best as it seems quite old and is fairly dry. It is a lot easier to strip with a wet younger fungi. The layer i'm using is the central layer called the trama layer between the hard outer shel and the spore tubes. It really is an ardous task in preparing the amadou. Some people say it should be soaked and boiled for 24hrs but there are lots of different methods and this method I have found to work fine.
