Was wollte Schopenhauer?
Was Schopenhauer a nihilist? What is the meaning of life? What is the world as will and representation really about, and why is Schopenhauer not read? PREAMBLE Arthur Schopenhauer enjoys the reputation of being one of the greatest philosophers of all time. He presents a comprehensive and highly interesting metaphysics of the will and a critique of science, bridging the gap that Kant opened between the subject and the thing-in-itself. Wagner deeply admires him and incorporates his ideas into numerous works. Nietzsche owes him central aspects of his philosophy and accuses him of nihilism. The Marxist Max Horkheimer, co-founder of the Frankfurt School, even considers Schopenhauer considerably greater than Marx. Schopenhauer is a brilliant stylist who expresses his thoughts in impressive and highly readable language. There is therefore every reason to engage with Schopenhauer. Yet, it seems, hardly anyone reads him. Why is that? Why would Schopenhauer's philosophy be particularly valuable for the present day?
