What the DuPont Family Buried Under the Brandywine — 288 Explosions Could Not Destroy It

In one hundred and nineteen years on the banks of the Brandywine Creek in Delaware, two hundred and eighty-eight explosions tore through the DuPont powder works. Every blast hit in two directions. Up went walls, roofs, men. Down went the shockwave, through foundations, through limestone, through rock three hundred and fifty million years old. Two hundred and twenty-eight people died. The 1818 explosion destroyed forty buildings in a single second. The 1890 blast was felt nine miles away in Wilmington and drove the du Pont family permanently from their mansion on the hill. The 1920 explosion shut production down forever. Each time, workers came back and rebuilt. Each time, they poured new foundations into the craters the explosions had left. Each time, digging through the rubble and the fractured rock, they went a little deeper than the time before. What they found at that depth never appeared in a single construction report.
