The first thing that surprised me was the giant watermelons lined up in rows filling the store! It was so impressive that I couldn't help but exclaim, "Wow!" lol Then, with just one bite, the crisp, popping texture and bursting with sweetness...it was just too good to be true! On the way, we made a detour to "Senbon Dango," a shop that's been featured on TV. These freshly baked dumplings are as fluffy as marshmallows and smothered in delicious bean paste and butter...they're so good you'll be cheating! From classic to more unusual flavors, we ate all seven before we knew it. lol When we returned to the old house, we sat around a charcoal grill on the veranda and slowly grilled summer vegetables. To finish off the meal, we enjoyed Yamagata's soul food, "cold meat soba," served with a charcoal grill. As the sun sets, the flickering lights create a magical veranda experience. As I savor the ice-cold watermelon, I think to myself, "Ah, this is what summer in Japan is all about." It truly was the best day ever.
