When Technology Meets Reality: A Fire Chief's Playbook

Every department eventually faces the moment when the technology in front of them no longer fits how the work actually happens. Sometimes the technology needs to adapt to established operations and policy. Other times, the technology surfaces policies, workflows, or labor agreements that have become overly complex or outdated. The challenge is figuring out which situation you're in. The friction rarely lives in one place. It can come from a policy written for a different era, a CLA clause nobody wants to reopen, an IT department with competing priorities, a PSAP that cannot change its handoff process, or a scope that quietly expanded after go-live. Chiefs, admins, and union leaders don't get to wait for the perfect system. They have to decide what to change, what to work around, who to bring into the room, and where to push back, all while managing operational, financial, and labor realities. This panel brings together fire service leaders from across those roles to share what works, what fails, and what they would do differently.
