Salen Log Counterpoint (Aditya Nugraha) - Premiered by Bandung Philharmonic

Salen Log Counterpoint composed by Aditya Nugraha, was awarded first place in the 6th Young Indonesian Composer Competition in 2024. The piece had its world premiere with The Bandung Philharmonic Orchestra during Symphony Concert: The Scottish on June 29, 2024, at the Auditorium Gedung PPAG UNPAR. Like a ticking clock bursting from the stage, Salen-Log Counterpoint builds tension and release with different parts of the orchestra talking back and forth in conversation. Composer Aditya Nugraha describes these conversations as, “When splendor and pelog elaborated.” These two scales overlap and dance with each other as they are passed between strings, brass, winds, and percussion. Listen for the strong appearance of the xylophone as it punctuates the conversation. This composition work is the result of exploration that begins with the fusion of two typical Javanese tone systems, known as salendro and pelog. It involves various developments in pitch, rhythm, dynamics, tempo, and articulation of each instrument using extended techniques. In this piece, there are adaptations of various traditional musical instrument techniques such as interlocking (carukan) and muted (tengkep) in gamelan ensembles, kecapi accompaniment patterns, etc., combined with the arrangement of tones that have the principle of many voices, also known as polyphony. Based on these elements, this work is named "Salen-Log Counterpoint" or "Kontrapung Salendro dan Pelog".
