Some composers of artistic endgames don't enjoy competitive chess because the tension, the pain of defeat, the time constraints, and the pressure of preparing a game in the morning, playing it in the afternoon, and analyzing it at night outweigh the pleasures of participating in tournaments. The antithesis is found in mid-level, high-level, or very high-level players (like Jan Timman, discussed several times here) who also create works of art in the form of studies. The masterclass discussed in this video belongs to the second group. The Czech player Jan Lerch (1942-2020) achieved the title of International Master as a player, and his rivals included such illustrious names as Karpov, Uhlmann, Pachman, Hort, Jansa, and Kavalek.
