The President of the Republic, Michel Temer, signed the decree of federal intervention in the Public Security of the State of Rio de Janeiro on February 16, 2018. The Military Commander of the East, Army General Walter Souza Braga Netto, was appointed as the state's interventor. The interventor will be responsible, until December 31, 2018, for commanding the Public Security Secretariat, the Civil and Military Police, the Fire Department, and the State Prison System. Already in effect, the intervention still needs approval from the National Congress.
