Menteng Metro Police Chief, AKBP Braiel Rondonuwu, apologized to the student protesters for not allowing them to demonstrate at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout in Jakarta on Monday (June 15, 2026). This incident occurred in front of the BCA Blu Tower. The protesters were walking from Sudirman Station to the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout. However, police attempted to restrain them. The situation escalated, and an argument broke out between the protesters and police. AKBP Braiel attempted to calm the crowd by speaking directly. Clasping his hands, he spoke with a student representative. "No, we can't demonstrate at Hotel Indonesia, we're not allowed. We've provided a venue, but it's at the National Monument (Monas), not here," Braiel told the crowd in a low voice. Braiel repeatedly apologized and offered to relocate the protest site as a form of negotiation to prevent the clashes from escalating. The students steadfastly rejected the offer to move to the National Monument, believing that demonstrating at the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout is a constitutionally protected right. "This is our constitutional right; we have the right to hold a demonstration. The Hotel Indonesia Roundabout is a public place, funded by the people's taxes," shouted the speaker from the command vehicle. Watch the full video below.
