An unnamed hill in southern Uzbekistan. No one knew what it concealed. Beneath it: a fortress, a palace, workshops, and two-thousand-year-old murals, hidden until 2023. Baburtepa has just been added to the archaeological map of Central Asia—and that same year, more than a hundred other previously unknown sites were discovered in the Kashkadarya oasis alone. How many cities like this one still lie buried beneath the sand?
