Soprano or mezzo? There's a voice that has remained unanswered for almost 200 years... and it bears the name of the woman who lost it at 23: Cornélie Falcon. Her story—and that of other voices on the fringes: Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, Waltraud Meier, Violeta Urmana, Dolora Zajick, Jessye Norman, and Elīna Garanča. In 1837, the highest-paid singer at the Paris Opera stepped onto the stage to sing three words: “I am ready.” Her voice broke and never returned. But the roles that Halévy (La Juive) and Meyerbeer (Les Huguenots) wrote for her voice continued to require THAT voice—neither soprano nor mezzo. Since then, those voices have been called Falcon.
