Also another advantage of the '"cross" or "zigzag" setup, is that you can reduce the effective penalties in round 1. Example: You have 3 tiles in the floor line (first player token + 2 tiles), then you'd normally have a penalty of -4. - if you go for the "line" setup (3 aligned tiles), which scores 6 points, you'd lose 4 points. if you go for the "zigzag" setup, which scores 3 points, you'd lose only 3 points. You can even stack more penalties "for free" if useful in a given situation.
