Midday News - Naval officers from the Chiang Rai Naval Border Patrol arrested a Thai and a Lao national at a pier in Chiang Saen District, seizing 1.3 million baht in cash as they were preparing to cross into Laos. A team from the Chiang Saen Naval Station and the Chiang Rai Naval Border Patrol Command, monitoring their area for illegal activities, noticed two suspicious men, a Thai and a Lao national, at approximately 5:20 PM yesterday evening. They were preparing to board a boat to cross the Mekong River to Ton Pheung, Bokeo Province, Laos, on the opposite bank. Upon a search, the officers found 1,364,000 baht in cash inside a brown envelope. Neither man could explain the source of the money. The officers then contacted Chiang Saen Customs and the Chiang Saen District Administration for further investigation and questioning. The latest investigation results indicate that the seized money... The two individuals are linked to a call center scam that tricked victims into transferring money. They crossed from Laos to withdraw money from a proxy account in order to send it to the call center gang located in Ton Pheung, across the border from Chiang Saen district. Authorities are currently investigating where the money was allegedly obtained to return it to its rightful owners.
