Spiritual Nourishment 3: Tripundra Vibhuti

This series is classified Viśiṣṭādvaita-vāda | Bhakti-yoga | Svapna | Maṇipūraka-cakra To prepare for making sacred offerings, one should purify the gross, energy and mental bodies. First taking nice morning bath after evacuating and before sunrise. Then application of Tripundra vibhuti or sacred ash to 12 places on the body. (Vaishnavas should apply gopichand tilak with Visnu-mantras.) The vibhuti or tilak is made using sacred water prepared by summoning the 12 sacred rivers to the achamanīya-patra by showing the ankusa-mudra (elephant goad) with the sacred thread wrapped around the thumb, and chanting: gange ca yamune caiva godavari sarasvati narmade sindho kaveri jale ’smin sannidhim kuru "May water from the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, Godavari, Sarasvati, Narmada, Sindhu, and Kaveri kindly be present."
