Based on his work, Olivier advocates a model of society inspired by living organisms, and whose principles are consequently guided by the pursuit of robustness rather than performance. He defines robustness as "the maintenance of a stable system despite fluctuations," with living organisms being masters in the art of robustness, having been able to adapt and survive 3.8 billion years of fluctuations. With him, we discuss the challenges of transitions at the local and territorial levels. For him, rural areas should no longer be seen as backward territories but as laboratories for the world to come, particularly in its fluctuations.
