"The most difficult part of developing an atomic bomb is obtaining enriched uranium," Lavalle states. Iran currently possesses uranium enriched to 60%, as verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), generating international concern as it far exceeds the levels necessary for civilian purposes. The global safeguards system seeks to control every gram of nuclear material, but inspectors report a lack of access to Iranian facilities. Following recent bombings of Iranian facilities, concerns persist about the 500 kilograms of enriched uranium stored there: "That amount could be used to manufacture several bombs like the one dropped on Hiroshima." The uranium market is dominated by countries like Australia, Canada, and Russia; however, there are fears about potential diversions to illegal markets. In addition to uranium, some countries have developed weapons using plutonium obtained in special reactors.
