'Black 5' 44871 Battles the High Peak Rain: Buxton Spa Express May 2026

LMS Black Five No. 44871 battles the changing weather through the Peak District! In this video, we catch the iconic LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 44871 working the Buxton Spa Express from three locations as the weather takes a turn for the worse. Chapel-en-le-Frith: A clean run through the High Peak on the approaches to Dove Holes tunnel, in dry but overcast conditions before the rain set in. The Climb out of Buxton: 44871 working hard against the gradient just as the heavens opened—complete with a few raindrops on the lens as the camera also battles the elements! New Mills South Junction: Filmed from the canal towpath on the opposite side of the valley with the rain still coming down. Watch as the train is briefly checked by a signal, drawing almost to a complete stand before pulling away. A real look at the challenges of wet-weather lineside filming and mainline steam in the hills.
