In 2023, in Shizugawa, Minamisanriku Town, Miyagi Prefecture, about 100 kilometers from Yamada Town, a construction worker volunteering to clean the beach discovered what appeared to be human bones. The remains were part of a lower jawbone, with teeth still attached. Identifying the remains proved extremely difficult, but the Miyagi Prefectural Police conducted "mitochondrial DNA typing," which identifies individuals from mitochondria (hundreds to thousands of mitochondria in a single cell), and "proteome analysis," which estimates sex from proteins on the tooth surface. Based on the determined age, sex, and DNA test results of the mother, Chiyumi, the remains were concluded to be those of Natsuki. After 14 years and 7 months, their daughter returned home. While it's a relief that the remains have been returned, the years that have passed must have been unimaginably difficult.
