As explained in the previous megger test, transformer insulation is divided into two types: primary insulation and auxiliary insulation. What are the insulation tests for power transformers? There are several tests performed to ensure the integrity of transformer insulation, as follows: Major insulation tests: These include: 1- Breakdown voltage test (oil insulation breakdown test) 2- Megger test (winding insulation test) 3- Power factor test (tan delta test) Secondly, minor insulation: This involves testing the insulation between the windings themselves. Tests performed on this include: 1- Turns ratio test 2- DC resistance test. Both the turns ratio and DC resistance tests are performed to ensure the insulation between the windings. The difference between them is that the turns ratio test uses alternating current (AC), while the DC resistance test uses direct current (DC). It is known that when measuring the insulation of any transformer between two conductors, there are two types of currents. Firstly, because there are two conductors with an insulator between them, a charging current (IC) flows, acting as a capacitor. In addition to the charging current, there is a leakage current, the value of which depends on the resistance value. Insulation and its name, Ir, as we discussed in the major test previously. Power factor test: What is the difference between the major test and the tan δ test? Both tests perform the same function: measuring insulation resistance. However, the Megger Delta 2000 test uses a DC current, while the tan δ test uses an AC current. Both tests are used to verify the transformer's insulation. Specifically, they measure the insulation between the high-voltage and low-voltage windings, between the low-voltage windings and the transformer body, between the high-voltage windings and the transformer body, and between the windings in general and the transformer body.
