A small parking lot is available right next to the lake. The lake of Montorge was formed 17'ooo years ago with the retreat of the glaciers. the site of Montorge which is a protected site because of the richness of its fauna and flora. The south side of the hill is particularly arid and rocky while the north side is more shaded and cool. The hill of Montorge is one of the hills of the city of Sion, the two most known are Valère and Tourbillon, the two fortified sites in the city of Sion. The lake is surrounded by beautiful reeds and trees such as poplars or willows that offer shade in summer to walkers. One can hear the croaking of the numerous toads which come to lay eggs in spring on the banks of the lake thanks to the humid environment constituted by the reedbeds and the meadows adjacent to the lake. The site of Montorge hosts on its summit the ruins of a castle which was the witness of the rivalry between the Upper Valais and the Savoy. La Torpille recommends a magnificent walk of about 2 hours for 5.5 km in the form of a loop which starts at the lake of Montorge and goes through the bisses of Montorge and siphon to finish by the ascent of the hill at 800 meters of altitude and the discovery of the ruins of the castle as well as a very pretty view on the city of Sion and the valley of the Rhone. The Maison de la nature is originally an old ice house that kept the ice from the lake in the shade of the Montorge hill, which freezes completely in winter. This activity ended in the 1950s with the appearance of refrigerators.
