On Wednesday, November 13, 2024, it was time to say goodbye at the gates of the city of Freiburg. The old wind turbine on the Holzschlägermatte on the Schauinsland was scheduled to be demolished at 3:30 p.m. However, heavy fog caused delays. Only after the demolition can the new wind turbine go into operation and feed the first kilowatt-hour of green electricity into the grid. At 4:20 p.m., the fog had cleared somewhat, allowing the demolition to take place. The concrete parts of the demolished tower will be removed and reused in road construction and other local construction projects. The foundation will then be completely removed and recycled. In its 21 years of operation, the still-existing turbine, together with its sister turbine, which was demolished last September, produced a total of approximately 99 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity for the region. The new, more powerful repowering system will generate approximately 9 million kilowatt hours annually, more than twice as much electricity as both old systems combined. This represents rapid technological progress that also benefits the region's residents. The dismantling of the system by the system manufacturer ENERCON took place in several steps: The nacelle, including the rotor blades, and the upper segments of the steel tower were dismantled using a crane. The remaining concrete tower was 88 meters high and was guided by the demolition expert into a specially created drop bed. According to experts, there was no danger to the repowering system: the distance was 200 meters. The concrete parts of the demolished tower will be removed and reused in road construction and other local construction projects. The foundation will then be completely removed and recycled. During the demolition, the Schauinsland cable car was shut down for about half an hour. The area within a radius of 200 to 300 meters of the old facility was closed for approximately 60 to 90 minutes both before and after the blasting, including part of Schauinslandstrasse and the parking lot of the Holzschlägermatte inn.
