Tren Maya en peligro: denuncian fallas estructurales y daño ambiental en la península

A new alert has been issued regarding the Maya Train. Specialists and environmentalists are warning of structural and environmental risks due to the soil conditions on the Yucatán Peninsula. According to documented evidence, the construction site is located on karst terrain, characterized by its porosity, instability, and susceptibility to dissolution by water. They assert that thousands of piles were driven into these soils, piercing cavities without guaranteeing stability. During construction, spills of cement, rusting steel, and materials that could have contaminated the natural groundwater system were also detected. The risk could increase if the Maya Train begins transporting cargo, especially fuels or chemicals, as any spill would quickly seep into the aquifer that supplies a large part of the region. In addition to the environmental impact, potential damage to archaeological heritage is also a concern, as there are Mayan ruins near the infrastructure.
