The brown rat is one of the most successful mammal species, having spread almost everywhere following humans. They are intelligent, resilient, undemanding, and prolific. They cause colossal damage to our economy, carry terrible diseases, and are beloved pets and laboratory animals used by scientists in various experiments. They evoke both horror and fascination. Natalia Nosova, head of the scientific and educational department at the Darwin Museum, explains.
