New criminal laws take effect from July 1, 2024. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam replaced the Indian Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the introduction of the three new laws marks an overhaul of the colonial-era code, adding an Indian soul to the criminal justice system. He asserted that the new laws will focus on nyay (justice) instead of dand (punishment).
