Sonadia is a small island in Maheshkhali Upazila of Cox's Bazar district. The island, which is made up of mangroves and coastal forests, has an area of ​​nine square kilometers. Covered by water on all sides, this land has found heavy natural minerals such as uranium, ilmenite, magnetite, garnet, zircon, rutile and monazite. The amount of such valuable mineral resources in Sonadia is estimated to be seven hundred thousand tons. However, garnet and ilmenite are the most abundant. Although the financial account of this valuable resource is not available, economists and geological experts believe that if it can be extracted commercially, it will give a new dimension to the country's economy. The Switzerland-based research journal 'Discover Geoscience' recently published a research paper on the valuable resources of Sonadia Island. Four researchers from the University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand, Westin University in Australia and Jahangirnagar University, Md. Shakhawat Hossain, Md. Shahriar Rahman, Golam Taki and Maftuha Jahan, conducted the research.
