SM7B vs EV RE20: The Sax & EWI Studio Shootout

It feels like every mic shootout on the internet is made for podcasters or singers. If you’re actually tracking horns in a bedroom studio, finding usable gear advice is rough. So, I grabbed two heavyweights—the Electro-Voice RE20 and the Shure SM7B—to see what they really do for us. Dynamic mics are a massive cheat code for playing sax in an untreated room. We’re pushing high SPLs and crazy overtones, and both of these mics handle the pressure differently. I also hooked up my Akai EWI and vocoder rig to see how they capture that synth flavor. We’re looking at the thick, proximity warmth of the SM7B versus the wide-open, flat response of the RE20.
