Outside the hut, a pack of aggressive wolves watches in the snowstorm, and the Mistress explains that she's hiding Tikhon not so much from the storm as from them. The reason is revealed: shortly before the storm, Tikhon stumbled upon a clearing where a gang of poachers named Zalomov had brutally shot many animals, including the pack's leader, a sacred white she-wolf. Tikhon hid in the bushes out of fear and remained silent, and after the bandits left, he took the white pelt as evidence. However, the wolves, by scent, identified him as the killer. The Mistress forces Tikhon to acknowledge his fear and cowardice. The final test is rescuing a wolf cub caught in a trap. Risking his life in the face of a she-wolf watching from the darkness, the unarmed Tikhon frees the cub. The wolves forgive him, and the Mistress recognizes him as the true guardian of the taiga, which he remains for the rest of his days.
