Nicholas II – The Last Emperor of Russia. A ten-part biographical documentary. A ruler whose empire grew economically faster than almost any other in the world in twenty years – and who simultaneously went down in history as the man who lost it. An educated, courteous, deeply religious man, a faithful husband, a loving father – and a monarch of the seventeenth century on the threshold of the twentieth. Hardly any figure in European history is judged so passionately and so extremely to this day. This comprehensive documentary follows the life of Nicholas II from his childhood home in Tsarskoye Selo to the cellar of the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. We examine the upbringing of an heir to the throne who was educated by the best minds in the empire and yet was never allowed to learn to stand up for himself. We stand at the deathbed of Alexander II on that March day in 1881, when he was torn apart by a bomb – and understand why his twelve-year-old grandson, from that day on, made every concession in blood. The documentary recounts the journey to the East and the saber cut at Otsu, the wedding a week after his father's funeral, the catastrophe on the Khodynka Field, and the ball that same evening. It reveals the machinery of an administration where all decisions converged on a single desk. It explains the golden decade of Russian industry, Sergei Witte's currency reform, and the first Hague Peace Conference, convened at the Emperor's personal initiative—the conference that gave rise to the Permanent Court of Arbitration, which continues to this day. We trace the path to war against Japan and the destruction of the fleet at Tsushima, Bloody Sunday in January 1955, and the most momentous act of his life: the manifesto of October 17th. We pay tribute to Pyotr Stolypin, the last great statesman of the empire, his agrarian reforms, his field courts-martial, and the shooting at the Kiev City Theater. We examine Grigory Rasputin's role, the illness of the heir to the throne Alexei, and the question of how great this man's influence actually was, objectively and without mythologizing. And we read Pyotr Durnovo's memorandum from February 1914, which predicted the entire course of the catastrophe—and which no one read. The final section takes us back to the days of February 1917: the halted imperial procession, the mutiny of the Volyn Regiment, the telegram revolution, the abdication in Pskov, and the journey to Tobolsk and Yekaterinburg. This documentary avoids both extreme positions that continue to shape the memory of this ruler—neither the caricature of the bloodthirsty figure nor the hagiography. Controversial issues are presented for what they are: controversial. Where sources contradict each other, the contradiction is acknowledged, not resolved.
